Ready for Spring? Are you getting impatient with the teasing of warm days among the snow and icy weather? Well, here are some things you can do to get yourself ready for Spring when it does arrive!
1. Observe your breathing.
Take a breath before you eat and pause to slow down as you nourish yourself. It will help your digestive system work more smoothly. Taking a deep breath can also help us calm down when we are stressed out and refocus when our minds are wandering.
2. Observe your chewing.
Remember teeth are in your mouth for a reason. Stomachs love mush, so chew a lot! Focusing on your chewing also helps you be more mindful and gives you more opportunity to enjoy your food.
3. Observe how drinking more water makes you feel.
Drinking water keeps your muscles, joints, brain, and all your organs primed, your skin glowing, your body alkaline, and your immune system boosted. If you prefer water with a little flavor, try adding lemon juice, berries, cucumber slices and/or mint leaves – the options are nearly endless.
4. Observe the beauty of green.
Observe the beauty of green in your food choices and in the greening of Spring as the season turns. Think sour green apples, sour pickles (many kids love them!), and green vegetables, as well as playing outdoors in safe neighborhoods, rec centers, and local parks. Notice the trees on a city street. Hug a tree! Feel its strength! Watch as it changes over the coming weeks. Ah! Spring is coming!
5. Think "green."
Green is the “go ahead” sign on a traffic light. Go ahead and start Spring cleaning in our homes and gardens, and our lives! Spring is a great time for moving past the cold stagnation of winter, useless patterns, and stuck ideas. Spring forward into new ideas, new activities, new relationships, and a commitment to be healthy in body, mind and spirit. Put a spring in your step!
6. Observe with your five senses.
Observe with your five senses when eating and when outdoors - Being mindful when we eat, you guessed it, slows us down and helps digestion. Mindfulness outside fills us with a sense of wonder of the natural world and keeps us centered in our hectic lives. Kids are naturally curious and observant – junior scientists! Challenge yourself to look at the world with the eyes of a child.
7. Cook more.
Only in cooking our own food can we fully experience our five senses and have the most control over the quality of the ingredients and the shelf life of what we’ve made! With kids, it is fun (and messy! What good cook isn’t a bit messy?)!
8. Plan in advance.
Plan your meals and snacks in advance to keep your shopping time, prep time, and your budget within your needs. This makes cooking more enjoyable, rewarding, and less stressful!
Smile a sweet, soft, genuine smile. A smile nourishes our bodies and helps those around us to smile, too.
10. Think "thanks!"
When you put your head on your pillow for the night, think of three things for which you’re thankful, so you may sleep with greater peace. Take a breath and let go of any tension from the day.
